Abstract

An improved document picker and separator for feeding documents in seriatum from a stack of documents has a high-density, flexible, polyurethane foam rubber picker roll 10 mounted on pivot arm 11, Figs. 1 and 2. Picker roll 10 is in contact with the uppermost document 12 and is continuously rotated to feed documents from the stack to a throat, formed between dual separator rolls 13 and cooperating restraint rolls 14. Separator rolls 13 are driven at a higher velocity than picker roll 10 so as to minimize buckling documents being restrained by rolls 14.

Document Picker and Separator

An improved document picker and separator for feeding documents in seriatum from a stack of documents has a high-density, flexible, polyurethane foam rubber picker roll 10 mounted on pivot arm 11, Figs. 1 and 2. Picker roll 10 is in contact with the uppermost document 12 and is continuously rotated to feed documents from the stack to a throat, formed between dual separator rolls 13 and cooperating restraint rolls 14. Separator rolls 13 are driven at a higher velocity than picker roll 10 so as to minimize buckling documents being restrained by rolls 14.

Polyurethane foam rubber separator rolls 13 actually flatten as they come into contact with a document. This provides area rather than line contact with the document. Hard rubber restraint rolls 14 contact the documents with a lower frictional force than do the separator rolls. However, this force is greater than the frictional force between documents. Hence, the document in contact with the separator rolls 13 will be advanced, but any additional documents picked by 10 will be restrained by rolls 14.

Picker roll 10 is over-driven by the document being fed. This is facilitated by one-way clutch 15 mounted in the picker roll hub. Documents advanced by separator rolls 13 are received by feed roll 16 and cooperating pressure roll 17. These feed rolls are positioned so that they take control of the document immediately after separation to minimize relative motion between the document and se...
