It is desired to exercise reel motors in a tape transport, for analyzing and accurately determining operation of the motion control circuits and the reel motors during worst-case operating conditions. Such testing can be done using microdiagnostics activated via channel commands by CPU programs or during an in-line mode of operation.

A tape drive has tape-transporting capstan 10 with vacuum columns 11 and
12. A transducing station is placed anywhere between the vacuum columns. The pair of tape reels L3 and 14 with associated reel motors, respectively, supplies tape and take-up tape from vacuum columns 11 and 12 in accordance with signals supplied from program control 15, which includes motion control circuits. When tape is to be moved in the forward direction, from reel 13 to reel 14, commands are supplied to such motion control circuits for operating reels 13, 14, and capstan 10. Additionally, sensors in vacuum columns 11 and 12 determine the relationship of the bights of tape in the vacuum column with relationship to the commanded direction for operating reels 13 and 14, to maintain a proper head-to-tape relationship in accordance with tape transport by capstan 10. Tachometers in reels 13 and 14 may control the motion control circuits associated with the reel motors. Additionally, tachometer T on capstan 10 actuates counter 16 for measuring tape displacement. Counter 16 supplies its displacement count to program control 15.
