Abstract

Single paper sheets 10 are fed from stack 11 by picker and separator assembly 12, through turn-around path 13 and onto output conveyor 14 for delivery, as shown by arrow 15. The picker and separator assembly 12 is supported on a bracket 16 pivoted on stack 17 to a stationary frame part 18. Thus, by pivotal action of bracket 16, the picker and separator assembly 12 is allowed to move downwardly as sheets are removed from the stack 11.

Single paper sheets 10 are fed from stack 11 by picker and separator assembly 12, through turn-around path 13 and onto output conveyor 14 for delivery, as shown by arrow 15. The picker and separator assembly 12 is supported on a bracket 16 pivoted on stack 17 to a stationary frame part 18. Thus, by pivotal action of bracket 16, the picker and separator assembly 12 is allowed to move downwardly as sheets are removed from the stack 11.

The picker and separator assembly 12 comprises a large picker roll 19 that is driven through suitable belt transmission from power delivered by motor 20 to selectively operable spring clutch 21. Spring clutch 21 is engaged by activation of electromagnet 21A whenever it is desired to feed a sheet. The assembly 12 further includes a separator roll 22, that is geared through over-running clutch 23 to the picker roll 19 in the opposite peripheral direction to the picker roll 19. The picker roll 19 and separator roll 22 form a nip through which sheets picked from stack 11 are fed. Upon feed of a single sheet, over-running clutch 23 will yield and separator roll 22 will be driven by picker roll 19 to feed the sheet through turn-around path 13 onto conveyor 14. In the event more than one sheet is pulled by picker roll 19 from stack 11, the low friction between the multiple sheets will allow the second undesired sheet to be driven backwardly by separator roll 22, while the top-most sheet continues to be fed forwardly by the picker roll 19.
