A stiff flexible document is inserted into another document, without preliminary wiping contact of one document with the other, by bowing the documents about respective axes that are perpendicular to each other.

A relatively stiff flexible document, such as a credit card 1 (Fig. 1), is incremented horizontally to a mounting station while another document 2 on which the card is to be mounted is incremented generally vertically to the station suitably bowed (by vacuum or edge guides) against a convexly curved guide surface 3. Document 2 has a hole 4 (Fig. 2) arranged centrally within four triangular-shaped corner slots 5 that extend apart a distance x slightly greater than the short dimension of card 1.

Rnm 6 then advances through hole 4 from the convex side of document 2 to force card 1 adjacent its short ends against parallel fulcrum ridges 7. This causes the central section of card 1 to bow inwardly, while the short end portions are driven backward toward document 2 to a position where the four corners of card 1 move arcuately into slots 5 without physical contact with document 2. When bowing force on the ram is relieved, card 1 will straighten under its inherent resiliency causing the four corners then projecting into the slots to become tucked under the angular edges 8 and thus interlockingly secure the card to the document.
