Idler Roller System

Shown is a low-inertia hollow idler roller 10. It is utilized in controlling the passage of a web through a fluid environment.

Perforations 12 in the roller enable the fluid actuated by a moving web, not shown, to flow through the roller thus preventing the web from planing over roller
10. This provides full contact of the idler with the web and rotation of the idler at line speed. When used in a cleaning environment, the perforations in the roller also provide agitation of the cleaning solution between the web and the roller for better web cleaning.

Baffles 14 are positioned inside the roller to further aid in maintaining constant-line speed rotation of roller 10. Web initiated fluid movement through perforations 12 provides pressure against the baffles. The pressure of the fluid inside the roller and against the baffles is relieved by rotation of the roller, and by expulsion of fluid through the perforations not in contact with the web.
