Piston Valve Solenoid Assembly

The assembly controls the movement of a series of pistons 10 disposed in a piston block 11 by air pressure from a plenum 12, utilizing a corresponding number of electric control solenoids 14.

The solenoids 14 each include a winding 16 disposed on a hollow core 18, which is in a suitable cavity provided in a manifold 20 and a coil holder 22 that are fixed together. A plunger magnet 24 is slideably disposed in each of the solenoids 14 and has a plunger tip 26 fixed thereon. Each plunger tip 26 has a valve element 28 formed thereon, which at times blocks a small diameter passage 30 connecting plenum 12 with the corresponding piston 10. A diaphragm 32 is disposed between coil holder 22 and manifold 20 for sealing pistons 10 with respect to air pressure from passages 30. A cover plate 34 overlies manifold 20, and a seal 36 is disposed between plate 34 and manifold 2O. A restore magnet 38 is fixed to cover plate 34 opposite plunger magnets 24. A circuit card 40 is provided for making the electrical connections to coils 16.

A coil 16 is electrically energized for drawing plunger 24 and its plunger tip 26 backwardly to allow air to jet through the corresponding passage 30 to the piston 10 connected thereto, and restore magnet 38 is effective on plunger 24 for returning plunger 24 into position in which the corresponding valve 28 blocks the passage 30 for allowing retraction of the corresponding piston 10.
