Multiple Hopper Paper Feed

This multiple-hopper paper feed utilizes a single clutch and drive shaft for each of the hopper sheet pickers, to provide a consistent drive response between hoppers.

Paper hoppers 13, 15, and 17 each have an adjustable bottom plate 19 which is selectively driven upward, so that the topmost sheet of a stack of sheets 21 engages a corresponding picker wheel 23, 25, 27. The bottom plates 19 are selectively driven in a downward direction to provide a minimum clearance between the topmost sheet and the corresponding picker wheel. Logic 29 provides output signals to each of the level control devices 31, 33, and 35, causing the topmost sheet of a selected hopper to engage its corresponding picker wheel, and assuring that the topmost sheet of the nonselected hoppers clears the picker wheel by the clearance distance. The bottom plate 19 of each hopper is driven upward by a weight 37 which operates through pulleys 39 and

Armature 43 engages ratchet 45 on pulley 39 when a logic signal is applied to coil 47 and causes the ratchet 45 and pulley 39 to rotate in a counterclockwise direction, thereby lowering bottom plate 19 by a fixed amount. The coil remains impulsed until the associated hopper 13 is selected. Logic 29 provides an output signal to clutch 51 which connects the drive 53 to each of the picker wheels 23, 25, and 27. Sheets are fed only from the selected hopper.
