Pneumatically Controlled Contactor

Dual in-line packages of integrated circuit modules are transported in a carrier to a pass-through test facility. This contactor establishes the connections for testing the module.

Identical contactor units 1, 2 are fastened to a molded interface socket 3 which establishes the row spacing between units 1 and 2, and also provides simple mounting of a contactor to a test can. A dual inline module package 4 having a plurality of contacts 5 is transported by a carrier between units 1 and 2. Contacts 6 are placed in a housing 7 of unit 1. Housing 7 and a piston assembly 8 form the basic contactor unit. The piston assembly includes the piston 9 which is loaded by spring 10 carried by plug 11. Piston 9 is retained in the cylinder by inserts 12, 13. Piston 9 activates contact 6. An air input is provided at 16 to each of units 1 and 2. The air enters the chamber behind plug 11 forcing piston 9 forward compressing spring 10, establishing contact between elements 5 and
6. When the air pressure is removed, the piston returns to the at rest position.

The contactor may be ganged to additional such units by inserting one part such as the unit 2, having the extension 14, into the receptacle 15 in another unit. In the absence of connecting additional units, the port 15 is closed.
