Present "COUNTRY CLUB" BlLLING SYSTEMS involve multiple passes of each invoice through readers, sorters and collators. In many instances, extra postage costs are involved.

By this new method for "country club" billing, the invoice will, for all practical purposes, be handled only once. The customer will receive a statement that contains all the data he needs to verify his purchase, including his signature and other handwritten entries. The steps in this method are as follows:

1) The invoices, after being opened in the mail room and placed in trays, are placed in the feed hopper of an optical character reader (OCR) machine. The OCR is equipped with a special feature which allows a predefined area of the invoice to be raster scanned. The OCR recognizes the imprinted data, i.e., account number, date, amount, ticket number, etc. The recognized data and the raster-scanned data become a digital record for that invoice.

2) For error correcting and batch balancing and special billing, an operator at a terminal keys in the tray number and the sequence number of the invoice to be handled will be displayed. Nonrecognized data will be manually entered from a keyboard.

3) The corrected and balanced invoices are computer sorted by cycle, account number within cycle, and by date within account number.
