Abstract

The read station comprises photodiodes or other light-sensitive cells 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...23 and 24 and additional cells A, B, and C, which are so placed in a row that they read a standard 80-column document card 40 or an 96-column document card 42. Card 42 has 96 columns of holes 44 therethrough divided into three vertically aligned groups of 32 columns. Each column may include eight holes so that three aligned columns have 24 aligned holes in all. Holes 44 are round and are on 0.087 inch centers. Cells 1, 2, 3, 4...23 and 24 are on the same centers as holes 44 so that card 42 may be passed over cells 1 to 24 and have each of the holes 44 read.

Card 40 has twelve holes 46 in each column, and there are 80 columns lengthwise of card 40. Holes 46 are rectangular in shape, have a length of 0.125 inch, and are spaced 0.125 inch apart. The spacing of cells 1 to 24 is such that cells 1, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 read the uppermost nine holes 46 in each column, and the additional three cells A, B and C read the lowermost holes 46, as card 40 is passed over the read cells. Cells A, B and C are at the one-fourth inch spacing of holes 46.

In the event that card 42 contains 96 columns of holes 44 with only six holes for each column, in this case cells 19, 20, 22 and 23 may be left out of the read station. One or more of cells A, B and C could be placed above the cells 1 to 24; and, in this case, card 40 is shifted upwardly from it...
