Magnetic Pull Tractor

A single or multiply web is gripped, maintained registered and positively advanced by magnet-carrying endless members.

Two pairs 1,2 of transversely spaced nonconductive endless timing belts are positively driven at a preselected lineal velocity by toothed drive pulleys 3,4, respectively, and entrained around respective idlers 5,6. Clamped or otherwise rigidly attached at preselected uniformly spaced points along the periphery of belts 1, are a plurality of magnets 7 having flat outer surfaces 8; whereas attached with the same spacing along the periphery of belts 2 are magnetizable steel plates 9, having flat outer surfaces 10 adapted to overlie in parallel register with the surfaces 8. However, plates 9 are resiliently biased to an outer limit position, but yieldable inwardly so as to provide an expansible nip that can yield, as necessary, to accommodate webs of differing thicknesses.

As a multiply web 11 enters the nip, each magnet 7 in succession will be moved around toward and then attracted to its associated plate 9, clamping the web therebetween and then positively advancing it through the nip until the magnet and plates separate at the downstream end of the nip. The web is thus continuously advanced at the preselected velocity, preferably with lateral registration being aided by side edge guides 12,13 adjacent the upstream and downstream ends of the nip.

If preferred, spring-biased plates 9 may be replaced with spring-biased magnets....
