Dual Side Matrix Printing

By having a carbon patch or a ribbon located on the reverse side of a card or document 10 a wire matrix printer, having a print head 12 with a vertical row of print wires 14, may be controlled to print on the front in the usual manner, either left to right (forward) or right to left (reverse) and on the back in the area where the carbon or ribbon is located.

The print head 12 is shown as driven by a threaded shaft 16. An emitter 18 on the shaft is used to operate a counter 20 which addresses the print wire select-decode circuits 22 connected over lines 24 to the print magnets operating the print wires 14.

The counter is controlled to advance in the forward direction by AND 26 and in the reverse direction by AND 28. AND 26 is controlled by a Print Front left to right latch 32 and a Print Back right to left latch 36. Print Front right to left latch 30 and Print Back left to right latch 34 control AND 28.

Thus, to print on the front of the document left to right, latch 32 is turned on; to print on the front of the document right to left, latch 30 is turned on; to print on the back of the document left to right, latch 34 is turned on; and to print on the back of the document right to left, latch 36 is turned on, and the counter 20 is operated forward or reverse as the case may be.
