Retry in Hierarchy Memory System

When data retrieved from a buffer 10 contains uncorrectable errors the backing store 12 should be interrogated to determine if the source data is correctable.

Where data retrieved from the buffer 10 of a memory having double-error detection and single-error correction contains, say, two errors so that the data is uncorrectable, then the backing store 12 should be interrogated to find out if the source of that data in the backing stores has one or less errors in it. If the source data contains less than two errors it is placed in the buffer, corrected and transmitted to the central processing unit. Furthermore, the section of the buffer originally containing the data is disabled.
