Abstract

The extended-fin thermoswitch provides protection for air-cooled computer frames in the event of an air moving device failure, or an excessive increase in air temperature. The device is capable of operating with large control voltage variations and over a fairly wide temperature range.

Extended Fin Thermoswitch

The extended-fin thermoswitch provides protection for air-cooled computer frames in the event of an air moving device failure, or an excessive increase in air temperature. The device is capable of operating with large control voltage variations and over a fairly wide temperature range.

The device consists of a wirewound resistor type of a heat source 10 which is mounted at one end of an extended-fin-heated sink 12, with the detector or thermoswitch 14 mounted at the opposite end of the sink. These components are attached to a mounting block 16 such that the fin-heated sink 12 extends out into the air stream.

When the air flow across the device stops, the heat transfer to the air from the heat source 10 and extended fin 12 decreases, thus the heat is more readily transferred along the length of the fin-heated sink 12 to the thermoswitch 14 at the other end. The temperature of the thermoswitch 14 rises, causing it to trigger and give an indication of the condition or shutdown the machine. The extended- fin surface 12 must have a temperature profile such that, even with large voltage variations, the temperature difference at the thermoswitch 14 due to blower on/off, is positive.
