Disc Drive Mechanism

This mechanism is for recording on a flexible magnetic recording disc in the manner that will produce a constant-recording density throughout the entire surface of the disc.

An interchangeable flexible magnetic disc 2 is mounted on a turn-table 1 that is connected to reel hub 3 wound with tape. Drive wheel 4 is driven by a synchronous motor 10 and attached to a spring loaded pivot arm 5, to maintain driving contact with the peripheral layer of tape on the reel hub 3.

As drive reel 4 rotates clockwise, it drives the tape film from reel hub 3 to the take-up reel 6 at a constant velocity. As the amount of tape on reel hub 3 decreases, the spring 8 pivots the arm 5 causing the read/write head on the recording arm 9 to move towards the center of the disc. The rate at which this occurs depends on the thickness of the tape film on the reel hub 3. Hysteresis clutch 7, driven by motor 11, winds all payed-out tape film to maintain film tension.
