Abstract

This latch is applicable for securing "roll-top desk" or other slidingly displaceable covers. The latching mechanism handle remains flush when the cover is closed. In latched position the handle 10 is pushed into the slot in the cover bar 12, against the force of the handle springs 14-14. A catch shaft 16 carried by 10, and thus displaced inwardly, engages a hole 18 in a catch block 20 mounted on the cabinet frame 22. A groove 24 on 16 locks in retaining spring 26.

Catching Mechanism for Roll Up Covers

This latch is applicable for securing "roll-top desk" or other slidingly displaceable covers. The latching mechanism handle remains flush when the cover is closed. In latched position the handle 10 is pushed into the slot in the cover bar 12, against the force of the handle springs 14-14. A catch shaft 16 carried by 10, and thus displaced inwardly, engages a hole 18 in a catch block 20 mounted on the cabinet frame 22. A groove 24 on 16 locks in retaining spring
26.

A release button 28, accessible from the exterior, is mounted to project through a hole 30 in 22. Springs 32, 34 on the shank of button 28 maintain 28 in a neutral position, with projection 36 extending into hole 38 toward, but not into engagement with, spring 26. When the release button 28 is depressed, retaining spring 26 is spread apart, thus releasing the catch shaft 16. Handle springs 14- 14 then operate to push handle 10 out to make it accessible for use and at the same time to disengage catch shaft 16 from block 20.
