Weather forecasting is based on collection of atmospheric data which are processed into a synoptic weather map.

This device is a sensing unit for the most critical atmospheric parameters such as pressure, temperature and humidity and will transmit continuous readings to a distant computer.

An acoustic transducer is mounted at the bottom end of an Hg thermometer or barometer. The transducer sends RF pulses and receives echoes after twice the acoustic transit time inside the cylindrical Hg column. The echo receiver induces via the feedback control a new pulse. The pulse repetition rate thus is a measure of the length of the Hg column. Temperature, pressure and humidity can be measured, the latter by keeping the outside of the Hg container moist. Other measuring instruments using liquid columns are likely suitable to use with the system.

The signals can be transmitted via some communication link and at their destination are fed directly into a computer and processed. The device may be applied in meteorology, pollution control and industrial instrumentation.
