This unidirectional emitter produces a discrete pulse for each increment of angular displacement. The pulse amplitude and shape are independent of the speed of rotation.

An impulse wheel 1 has a plurality of teeth 2 which overlap spring 3. As the wheel rotates in the direction of the arrow, spring 3 is moved away from piezojunction transistor 4. When the wheel has rotated far enough, spring 3 is released and snaps back against piezojunction transistor 4. A butyl damper 5 encases transistor 4.

An alternative for transistor 4 is a magnetic core arranged to be impacted by armature spring 3 in the same manner as shown. A sensing coil around the magnetic core produces a discrete pulse from the rapid flux change produced by the high-velocity movement of 3 when released.
