Service calls such as an operator offer, a camp-on, a transfer, are considered as "diversion" procedures and processed independently from the main call. This program allows separation between the handling of events relating to the main network and events relating to the service network.

In an electronic PBX such as the IBM 3750, a main network permits linking of two lines X and Y through a junctor J made up of two parts which can be separately addressed and marked. A service network allows temporary additional connections which do not modify established telephone calls, except for the status of the junctor middle. When a service call is requested, the service line is linked with the same junctor side as the line involved in this call.

The data defining current transactions are stored in a transaction table made up of transaction blocks. Each block is assigned to one transaction and is made up of two half-blocks, each of which corresponds to one of the lines involved in the transaction and contains the address of the line and its status.

It is proposed to isolate the processing of the service calls in the PBX under the term DIVERSION; to consider the diversion as a specific status, causing the transaction in progress to be split, in some cases, thus allowing the other party to be quite independent from the service call.
