Abstract

Multiple impressions from type, with a single inking, have been obtained using a simple fabrication method, that promotes the surface flow of ink for reinking the printing surface between impressions. This method consists of forming shallow surface pits on the type face (including the printing surface of the elevated character, the sides of the elevated character, and the base region around the elevated character) and subsequently coating this roughened surface with a thin layer of material, which is chosen to have a low-contact angle with the ink being used. Type treated in this way, when inked once over the entire type-face area, yield multiple printed impressions.

Multiple impressions from type, with a single inking, have been obtained using a simple fabrication method, that promotes the surface flow of ink for reinking the printing surface between impressions. During each print impact, ink is transferred from the printing surface of the elevated character to the paper. After this, the ink on the printing surface of the character is replenished by capillary flow from the surface of the base region around the elevated character, up the sides of the elevated character to the printing surface. The surface roughening is required to provide storage volume for ink in the valleys, and to provide a path for capillary flow through the valleys from the base region to the printed surface.
