Counterbalanced Traverse Mechanism

In this traverse mechanism, a DC servo motor 1 drives a timing belt 2 in either direction, as indicated by arrow 3. A carriage 4 is clamped to timing belt 2 in a fashion which allows it to be driven along guide rods 5 and 6.

A counterweight 7 is fastened to belt 2 on the opposite side from carriage 4. Guide rods 8 and 9 allow counterweight 7 to move in the direction opposite to the motion of carriage 4 to provide a balanced system.

In the case where a high degree of accuracy is required in positioning carriage 4, an emitter, or other suitable servicing device, can be affixed to drive shaft 10.
