Light Emitting Diode Mounting Block

This is a technique for positively mounting thin leaded photon-emitting diodes 5 to a printed-circuit card 9 in a horizontal plane for edge viewing.

The block is multisectional, each section 1 being capable of stand-alone mounting or, being linked as shown at edge 2 by the material of which it is comprised. A breakaway feature in the form of notches 3 and kerfs 4 is included.

The photon-emitting diode 5 (not an integrally supplied part) is adhesively secured to the block. The leads 6 are fed through the two holes 7 and bent 90 degrees, as shown at 8, to the plane. The assembled block and photon-emitting diode 5 as shown in Fig. 2, are inserted into a printed-circuit card 9 and secured by soldering the pins 10 in each section. Electrical connection of the photon- emitting diode 5 is by leads 6 at points 11.
