Adaptive Power Switching Method

In large modularized storage systems, it is desirable to selectively switch off power from memory modules not being currently addressed where power consumption is critical.

A method is described for automatic control of the power switching function. Power is switched ON to a given memory module when the computer first addresses a location in that module. A time delay penalty is incurred while power is being switched. To minimize further delays, power is maintained ON the module for a statistically determined period of time T after each access. This time period is determined on the basis of the expected next access to the module. If an access occurs within this time period, the power is maintained for another period T. If no access is made within time T, it is assumed that the program has advanced to routines using other modules and the power is switched OFF the previously powered up memory module.

The power switching function may be controlled by a single-shot multivibrator set for a statistically determined period.
