The feed mechanism comprises a friction feed roll 11 which is disposed beneath a stack of punched document cards 13 carried in a hopper 15, and which is incrementally rotated for feeding cards 13 one at a time out of hopper
15.

A card weight 16 holds cards 13 in contact with friction feed roll 11. Hopper 15 includes throat knife 17 having a spacing from roller 19 just slightly greater than the thickness of a card 13, and feed roll 11 moves cards 13 into the bite between feed rolls 21 and pressure rolls 23. Roll 11 is incremented in rotation by a crank 25 having a pin 27 disposed in a slot 29 of a slider 31. doll 11 is fixed on shaft 33, and a magnetic clutch 35 provides a driving connection between slider 31 and shaft 33. Clutch 35 comprises clutch members 37 and 39, and an electric coil 41 is effectively disposed between members 37 and 39 so that these members magnetically engage when coil 41 is energized. A one-way drive bearing 43 is pressed into clutch member 39 and rides on shaft 33, and is effective to drive shaft 33 and roll 11 only in the direction A. Feed roll 11 has grooves 45 cut into its periphery so as to provide circular lands 47 on the periphery of roll 11. Document cards 13 are provided with rows of punched openings 49 therein separated by nonpunched row portions 51, and the circular lands 47 are in exact alignment with the nonpunched rows 51. Roll 11 is also provided with longitudinally extending slots 53 defined by ribs 55 and having embodiments 57 of elastomeric high-slip material disposed therein.
