Printing applications having a wide variation in character surface area and document thickness require variable levels of print hammer impact energy.

A print hammer 1 is shown having a pair of separately energizable coils 3, 4. Hammer 1 is movable with respect to stator 5 about pivot point 2.

If coil 3 provides a greater magnetic force than coil 4, four separate levels of impact energy can be achieved by energizing either coil 3 or coil 4 separately; by energizing coil 3 and coil 4 in bucking relationship so that the total field is the difference between the fields produced by coil 3 and coil 4; or by energizing coil 3 and coil 4 in additive relationship so that the total field is approximately the sum of the fields produced by each coil separately.
