Air Probe

An air-jet probe is used both as a reference surface and proximity sensor by constructing side vents adjacent the airstream nozzle.

Commercial air probe ends can be modified to also serve as fixed reference surfaces by adding a cap to the original nozzle. In the drawing a commercial probe 1, with nozzle orifice 1, is fitted with cap 3 having an orifice 4 aligned with the original. Surface 5 of the cap is milled and ground to provide projections 6 having locating surfaces in a common plane. Exhaust channels 7 provide escape ports for air when the locating surfaces are in contact with a part. Channels 7 permit the air gage to be zeroed during contact and later to accurately indicate the proximity of the part, as in a grinding operation.
