Connecting Braze Preforms to Workpieces

Disclosed is apparatus for automatically attaching either pins or solder buckets to a preform as by brazing or welding.

Referring to Fig. 1, a fragmentary schematic sectional view of the apparatus is illustrated, there being a single station shown representative of a plurality of like stations extending axially (into the plane of the paper) of a stationary cylinder
10. Circumscribing the stationary cylinder 10 is an assembly sleeve 11 having a plurality of workpiece receiving apertures 12 along the periphery of the stationary cylinder. Although not shown, vacuum ports are provided in the stationary cylinder. 10 at positions such that when the assembly sleeve indexes, vacuum will hold workpieces in the apertures. A preform loading station 13 operates to load a preform into an aperture 12, by oscillating a loading wheel 14. The loading wheel has preform receiving means 15 along the periphery thereof, and the preforms are dropped into a workpiece receiving aperture 12 as the loading station 13 turns. After placement of the preform and indexing of the assembly sleeve, a workpiece such as a pin 16, in a like manner as the preform 15, is loaded into the work holding apertures 12, successive indexing of the assembly sleeve bringing the aperture 12 into registry with the welding apparatus 17.

In order to effect the weld, mounted in the stationary cylinder 10 is a push rod 18 (composed of a substance such as graphite) which is conne...
