Abstract

An electrochemical printer includes an endless nylon fabric tape 10 forming an endless loop. Tape 10 is impregnated with an indifferent salt such as KF plus a pH sensitive indicator, such as thymol blue (erasable black marks) or phthalein (erasable red marks). The chemistry involved is electrochemically reversible. A cassette 11 containing loop 10 is sealed for cleanliness and humidity control. Tape viewing window 12 in cassette 11 is transparent. The writing head 13 is made of etched MYLAR* tape plated with gold. Dot matrix printing is provided by writing and reference electrodes in the same plane.

Electrochromic Tape Loop Display for Portable Terminal

Erasing head 14 of gold plated MYLAR carries an erasing bar crossing all dot imprinting tracks on tape 10 and a reference electrode contacting tape 10 near its edges, leaving a mark on edges of tape 10 masked by the narrow or undersized window 12, as indicated by lines 15. This is in a handheld wireless terminal, card punch verifier or display unit. Unit 16 pretreats tape 10. Tape 10 turns on capstans 17. * Trademark of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.
