Floating and Releasable Tape Guide

A magnetic recording tape is guided by a floating and releasable guide mechanism Which allows for tape width variations during reading, writing, and erasing.

After cassette 6 having included tape 1 has been loaded into a reader recorder, frame 8 carrying a read/write head, not shown, is moved to the left. Fixed guide rail 3 and floating guide rail 2 will be inserted into cassette 6, as shown in Fig. 1. As frame 8 continues to be moved to the left, lug 9 on crank 4 will contact block S. Crank 4 will be rotated about Post 7 bringing floating guide rail 2 into contact with tape 1, as shown in Fig. 2. Thereafter, when frame 8 is to be withdrawn (moved to the right), crank 4 rotates in a clockwise direction releasing tape 1. This will prevent tape 1 from being broken and/or pulled out of cassette 6.
