Device Independent Conversion Program

The system residence file for a Disk Operating System, recorded on one type of disk storage, is transferred to another type of disk storage with a different file organization. For this transfer intermediate device-independent storage on tape is used.

In a first phase, the device type information is read from the first disk storage. With the aid of a table of device characteristics, the system residence file, mainly consisting of Initial Program Loading program and Libraries, is transferred from the first disk storage to the tape in a device-independent format, the device dependent information in the directories being erased, with a view to their adaptation in the second phase.

In the second phase, the device type information is read from the second disk storage, and using a table of device dependencies, the device-independent file on the tape is transferred to the second disk storage, the device dependent information now being adjusted to the organization of the second disk storage.
