Magnetic Stripe Laminating Machine

This is an apparatus and method for the application of a magnetic recording material stripe 14 to a paper substrate 8.

The process is one of thermoplastic lamination. A magnetic recording material, previously coated on a MYLAR* substrate, is overcoated with an adhesive to a dry film thickness of from 400 to 500 micro-inches. The adhesive overcoated material is then slit to the desired stripe width and wound onto reel 2.

Paper substrate material 8 is fed into the laminating machine from unwind brake tension device 6 and is edge guided 9 onto hot drum 10. Magnetic striping material 4 is fed in from a separate unwind brake tension device 2 (under very low tension) and edge guided, not shown, onto the same hot drum 10. The edge guide used here may be a shoe guide, and should be at least four times as long as the stripe width to control the location of the contact point of stripe 4 and paper 8. Stripe 4 is located under paper 8 and next to hot drum 10 with its adhesive coated side adjacent paper 8.

As the two members 4, 8 proceed around revolving hot drum 10, the adhesive on stripe 4 is melted and wets paper 8. The package then proceeds under a (hot) spring 16 loaded pressure roll 18 which presses stripe 4 firmly onto paper 8, and thus forces the adhesive down into the paper fibers.

After pressure application between rollers 10 and 18, the package continues in contact with hot roll 18.
