Timing Belt Pin Feed Apparatus

This is a forms feeding device wherein an undersized timing belt is stretched to exact pitch length, to prevent belt wear and relaxation from decreasing feeding accuracy.

A multiply web 1 (later severed into separate subwebs or streams by transversely spaced rotary slitter blades 2 and cooperating dies 3) is driven by pairs of feed pins 4 (one pair per stream) transversely spaced with precisely predetermined longitudinal spacing inboard of the longitudinal edges of the web. Pins 4 are mounted on timing belts 5 (one per stream) entrained around drive pulley 6 and idlers 7-11. Pins 4 enter pin feed holes 12 (Figs. 2,3) punched by transversely spaced rotary punches 13 and cooperating dies 14 (one pair per stream), in what will become discardable stub portions of grain long sets. The web has no detachable marginal strips; holes 12 are in lieu of the pin feed holes conventionally provided in the strips.

In this apparatus, it is essential that spacing of feed pins 4 be maintained within a tolerance of less than +/- 0.005'' in the running direction. Accordingly, before use in the apparatus just described, pins 4 are installed in plastic saddles 15 mounted as follows on undersize timing belts 5. These belts use fiberglass cord or the like which is wound under tension, preferably in two superposed layers, as right and left helices, to minimize the tendency of the belts to cock when stretched, and give them an undersized pitch length when relaxed.
