Punching Device for Prescored Cards

To improve reliability of removal of chads from prescored index point areas, a punching device is provided with means to cause a chad to be dished or bowed in two directions by a stylus.

In this device (only partially shown), a tabulating card 1 with removable chads 2 is inserted under a conventional template 3 and over a novel plate 4 having a plurality of holes 5, each axially aligned with selected ones of the chads. Plate 4 overlies conventional parallel arranged, closely spaced, suitably supported, resilient die strips 6a,b.

Manually controlled stylus 7 is directed through guide hole 8 in template 3 to deform a selected chad 2 into the underlying cavity, defined by an aligned hole 5 in plate 4 to dish the chad downward into an inverted dome shape. This results in increased pulling force on the corner ties 9 that removably attach the chad to the body of the card, because the card body remains supported on the upper surface of plate 4. As stylus 7 continues to force the chad downward to the position in which it is shown in broken lines, the ties 9 will tear-burst and separate the chad from the card. Die strips 6a,b will be spread to the positions in which they are shown in broken lines; and the chad will be bent into a U-shape and eventually pushed into a chad collection area 10 below the Strips and there retained as the stylus is later removed.

The thickness of plate 4 and the size of holes 5 are preselected according to the...
