Abstract

In the partially exploded view of the figure, ball slide assemblies 2 and i are permanently mounted 90 degrees to one another. Attached to ball slide 2 is a gear rack 4 and locking rail 5. A spindle 6 has at one end a gear 8 and a disk 9, which retain locking rail 5 captive therebetween and at the opposite end workpiece 10 is concentrically mounted. Spindle 6 is received in a ball bushing 11 mounted in support block 12, to accommodate both axial and rotary motion. A tracer support 14 is secured to support block 12 and carries a depending tracer 15, the terminal portion 16 of which is received in a slot 18 of a master plate or tool 20. Master plate 20 is secured to ball slide 3 to effect unitary motion therewith during operation.

Spindle 6 is received in a ball bushing 11 mounted in support block 12, to accommodate both axial and rotary motion. A tracer support 14 is secured to support block 12 and carries a depending tracer 15, the terminal portion 16 of which is received in a slot 18 of a master plate or tool 20. Master plate 20 is secured to ball slide 3 to effect unitary motion therewith during operation. The entire assembly is mounted in a fixed position with respect to the bed of a mill or jig grinder 22, to permit the latter to be advanced toward the axis of workpiece 10.

All movements of workpiece 10 are controlled by the action of tracer 15 riding in slots 18 accurately machined in master plate 20. Movement of ball slide 2, in the direction X-X, is converted from linear motion of the ball slide to rotary motion of workpiece 10, as rack 4 and gear 8 induce rotation of spindle 6. Linear motion in the Y-Y direction is imparted to workpiece 10 as axial linear motion, as locking rail 5 cooperates with gear 8 and disk 9 to induce axial movement of spindle 6.
