Abstract

A belt printer consists of a moving type character belt 10 which passes around two pulleys 12 and 14. In addition to type characters 16, timing marks 18 are provided as shown in the inset. One point on the belt is identified as the home or starting position 20 (extra wide space between marks). The timing marks are read by the usual transducer 22.

Determining Carriage Position in a Belt Printer

A belt printer consists of a moving type character belt 10 which passes around two pulleys 12 and 14. In addition to type characters 16, timing marks 18 are provided as shown in the inset. One point on the belt is identified as the home or starting position 20 (extra wide space between marks). The timing marks are read by the usual transducer 22.

An additional transducer 24 is provided which also reads the timing marks and home position on the belt. This transducer is attached to a movable carriage 26 so that it moves along the belt with the carriage, which permits the use of forms of various widths. Since the belt is moving at a fixed speed, the time between when the two transducers read the home position, is a function of the distance between the two transducers or the position of the carriage. Using the relationship of the two home pulses, the system logic can determine the position of the carriage.
