It is desirable to provide a low-cost, compact, information retrieval system having relatively high-access rates.

Selectively rotatable carrousel 10 has a plurality of rows of circumferentially disposed storage compartments 11 respectively on different radii. One or more carriages 12, movable along dotted path 13, access e compartments as indicated by hatched areas. Rotatable carrousel 10 selectively moves any one of the storage compartments to an accessing position; hence, as carriage 12 traverses a chord of the carrousel, preferably in a diameter as shown, one or more storage compartments may be accessed. For enhancing operation, other carriages 14 movable along travel path 13 can simultaneously access other storage compartments, or provide an article transfer to one of the two processing stations or an input or output station. Positioner 15 indexes carrousel 10 to the desired position, in accordance with computer generated command signals.

As shown, carriages 12 and 14 may travel through a travel loop (like a race track) including both processing stations, input/output stations, and carrousel 10. While an open-ended travel path could be provided, a greater number of carriages can be more easily installed and used on a single travel path if a closed loop is used.
