Magnetic Brush Unit with Magnetic Conveyor

A cylindrical magnetic conveyor conveys developer material to a rotating cylindrical magnetic brush which, in turn, conveys the developer material to a development zone, to effect development of an electrostatic image located on a photoconductive surface.

Developer material, comprising magnetically attractable beads and toner material electrostatically attracted thereto, located within reservoir 11 is gravity fed through gate 13 to pick up zone 15. Continuously, rotating cylindrical applicator roll 17 having magnets 19 located thereunder, conveys the developer material from pick up zone 15 to magnetic brush cylinder 21. Magnetic brush cylinder 21, rotating in the direction of arrow 23, conveys the developer material past doctor rod 25 to cylindrical photoconductive surface 27, rotating in the direction of arrow 29. Magnetic beads and unused toner are retained on the surface of cylinder 21 until they reach area 31, at which time they are slung back into reservoir 11 and mixed with freshly added toner from toner bin 33 by mixing augers 35. Developer material remaining on applicator roll 17 is transported to pick up zone 15.

To facilitate transfer of developer material from applicator roll 17 to cylinder 21, magnet 37 is placed adjacent the transfer position while no magnet 19 is located adjacent the transfer position.
