Paper Feed Aligner Mechanism

A paper feed aligner mechanism receives rapidly fed cut sheets and registers them against an edge guide, while continuously feeding the sheets forward through the aligner in a vertical direction.

Paper fed between drive rolls 3, 4 passes between fixed vertical guide plates 5, 6 and through two sets of whiffle wheels 7, 8 and 9, 10 and their corresponding spring biased idler wheels 11, 12 toward the continuously rotating feed rolls 13, 14. The whiffle wheels are skewed at a slight angle of 7 to 9 degrees relative to the paper path, in order to guide the paper against U-shaped edge guide 15. The wheels are segmented with slits that allow the wheel to deflect axially when the paper is aligned against edge guide 15. The utilization of four whiffle wheels prevents the unsupported sheet of paper from rotating about its friction point, due to gravity, as it is fed through the whiffle wheel pinch points.
