Magnet Configuration for a Hall Sensor Emitter Wheel

A Hall sensor emitter wheel includes an economical magnet configuration utilized to switch a Hall sensor.

Emitter wheel 11 comprises a permanent magnet 13 of plastiform magnetic material, magnetized as indicated by arrow 15, and a disc of soft ferromagnetic material 17. Disc 17 is pierced to provide a pin 19 which extends through hole 21 in magnet 13 (Fig. 3). The top of pin 19 and the surface of magnet 13 are flush. As emitter wheel 11 rotates about axis 23, the pins pass in close proximity to Hall sensor 25. Hall sensor 25 is held off during the presence of the north magnetic pole. As pin 19 approaches. Hall sensor 25 experiences a changing magnetic field as a function of horizontal displacement. The magnetic field changes from a north to a south magnetic pole directly over pin 19. The changing magnetic field as a function of distance is directly proportional to the ratio of pin 19 diameter to hole 21 diameter.
