Bearing Seal

A specially designed bearing seal is utilized in conjunction with a magnetic brush developer, to prevent toner and carrier beads from contaminating the ball bearing race.

Shaft 1 is supported for rotation by ball bearings 2. Metal washer seal 3 has a hole diameter that is a few thousandths of an inch larger than the diameter of shaft 1, thereby preventing carrier beads from moving toward felt seal 4 and ball bearing 2 along shaft 1. Felt seal 4 fits tight around shaft 1, preventing microscopic toner particles from migrating toward ball bearing 2. Metal or plastic spacer 5 fits between the bearing and felt seal 4 to prevent felt fibers from being caught in the bearing race. Washer 3, seal 4, and spacer 5 thus prevent developer material 6 from migrating into ball bearing 2.
