A scanning lens system incorporates two sets of mirrors, each set being individually selectable to provide differing magnification ratios without necessitating repositioning of the lens, when going from one magnification mode to another.

A document located on fixed object plane 11 is projected onto image plane 13 by lens 15, which scans in the direction of arrow 17. In a first magnification mode, mirror 19 is positioned out of the optical path at position 19'. Light reflected from object plane 11 thus passes along dotted line 21 through lens 15 onto mirror 23, from which it is reflected to mirror 25 and thence to image plane
13. In a second magnification mode, mirror 19 is placed in the optical path and mirror 23 is moved to position 23' out of the optical path. Light is then reflected from mirror 27 to mirror 19 and thence through lens 15 to image plane 13. The lens is positioned so that the object-to-lens distance is that which is needed for the first magnification mode, while the image-to-lens distance is that which is required for the second magnification mode.
