This is a dashpot mechanism for controlling the vibration and acceleration of a magnetic read head. The head, not shown, is mounted to carriage 2 and caused to scan the magnetic stripe, for example, on a data or identification card, not shown.

Flexible tube 4 contains a fluid and is compressed by roller 6. Roller 6 is mounted on arm 8 which is loaded by spring 10 against stop 12. When reading the data card, force F(H) moves the carriage to the right. Fluid passes along path 14 from one side of the roller to the other, thereby controlling the acceleration and jitter of the head. When cocking the head in preparation for a scanning movement, force F(L) moves the carriage to the right. This causes roller 6 and arm 8 to move to the dotted line Primed position, and the fluid follows path 14' through a larger orifice than provided for path 14, such that higher velocity is permitted and jitter not so carefully controlled.

By removing spring 10 and pivotable arm 8 and mounting roller 6 on a fixed axis, the same damping and speed control characteristics could be obtained in both directions of travel of carriage 2.
