Abstract

A directory of the data set content on a satellite storage media is built in higher speed storage as the data sets are encountered in sequential searches. This avoids the need for either placing the directory entirely on the media or compiling a directory from an initial full sequential search of all data sets. The process is particularly useful where movement of the random-access mechanism is relatively slow or creates undesirable wear on the mechanism.

A directory of the data set content on a satellite storage media is built in higher speed storage as the data sets are encountered in sequential searches. This avoids the need for either placing the directory entirely on the media or compiling a directory from an initial full sequential search of all data sets. The process is particularly useful where movement of the random-access mechanism is relatively slow or creates undesirable wear on the mechanism.

The first request for a particular data set initiates a sequential search from the start of the data-set area. As data sets are encountered, entries of identity information and physical location for each such data set is made in the directory. Subsequent requirements first search the directory as then compiled. If a directory entry is found, direct movement to the required data set is initiated. If a directory entry is not found, sequential searching is again initiated at the point where it last terminated and the directory is extended as data sets are encountered. The directory is marked as complete and no further sequential searches are initiated, once any sequential search reaches the end of the area containing the data sets. When the media containing the data sets is removed, the directory is destroyed.
