Abstract

As shown, a supply reel 10 is mounted in the throat of a vacuum column 12. The vacuum in the column is pulled through port 14. Normal tape path 16 is in the vacuum column and subsequently around the guide 18. During threading or rewind, the tape moves along path 20 from the guide 18 to the supply reel 10. As the approach angle to the guide from either the supply reel or the vacuum column is very nearly the same, the action of the guide will be the same whether the tape approach is along path 16 or path 20. As a side effect, when the tape is rewound onto the supply reel, the reel very nearly fills the throat of the vacuum column and tends to act as a seal against debris entering the vacuum column.
