Deformographic Film With Barrier Layer in Target Assembly

This deformographic film provides higher conductivity and greater optical transmissivity for transmission type Deformographic Storage Display Tubes (DSDT), and better reflectivity for reflective type DSDT.

A target assembly 10 as shown, comprises a dielectric substrate 12 such as a mica disk or a MYLAR* membrane onto which an electron beam impinges. On the side of the substrate 12 remote from the electron beam there is a deformographic film 14 of silicone polymer material for example. A barrier layer 16 of collodion or polyvinyl formal, such as FORMVAR** F15-95, is laid over the film 14 between the latter and a conductive member 18, forming a ground plane for the DSDT. The member 18 preferably is gold or silver or aluminum, but may be another suitable conductor readily deposited by an evaporative process or the like.

The "overwrite" protection is better by a factor of 5 to 10 and the conductivity of the member 18 is increased over that of a conductor (of the same thickness) in this target assembly. The barrier layer 16 also improves the uniformity, reflectivity, and optical features of reflective systems, for example employing aluminum of sufficient thickness to be highly reflective. Migration of metallic ions through the film 14 is prevented, thereby increasing the effective life of the assembly. * Trademark of E.
