Cross Pole Magnetic Head

A compact magnetic head for reading, writing, and erasing very high density analog information on magnetic media is constructed with the read/write and erase coils positioned 90 degrees relative to one another.

During manufacture, a read/write shell 1 has positioned therein a read/write pole 2, a read/write coil 3, and magnetic spacers 4. Positioned in erase shell 10 are erase coils 11, erase pole 12, erase shim 13, erase return pole 14, nonmagnetic spacer 15, and read/write return pole 16. Shim 13, pole 14, spacer 15, and pole 16 are laminated together before insertion into erase shell 10. Thereafter, shells 1 and 10 are bonded together to form a magnetic head. With this arrangement, the magnetic coupling between the coils will be minimal, larger cross-section pole pieces can be used without compromising the gap-to-gap spacing or the head size, and the read/write and erase gap-to-gap spacing can be smaller.
