Measurement System

This is a measurement system for measuring maximum and minimum values of an analog input signal. The measurement system is particularly useful for measuring ripple in a power supply.

The analog input signal is applied to analog-to-digital (A/D) converter 10 and the conversion takes place under control of a Sample Start Command on conductor 11, from system control logic 12. A/D converter 10 provides a digital output on bus 13 to registers 14 and 15, and to comparators 16 and 17. It also provides a Sample Ready signal to 12 via conductor 18. The digital data from 10 is loaded into registers 14 and 15 under control of Load Max and Load Min signals on conductors 20 and 21, respectively.

A Start Command signal on conductor 22 is applied to 12 to initiate an A/D conversion. The digital output on conductor 13 for the first conversion is loaded into registers 14 and 15, as system control logic 12 provides Load Max and Load Min signals on conductors 20 and 21, respectively. The digital output for the next conversion made in response to the next Sample Start Command is compared by comparators 16 and 17, with the values in registers 14 and 15, respectively. If the new digital value is either higher or lower than the previous digital value, then either comparator 16 or comparator 17 will provide a signal to system control logic 12 which, in turn, will issue either a Load Max or Load Min signal to store the new value in either register 14 or 15.
