Abstract

A typewriter like that disclosed in U S Patent 3,618,736 accomplishes tabulation to preset column positions as an inhibited print function. Escapement pawl 10, carried by letter feeding type element carrier 11, is lifted by torque bar 12 from stationary rack 13 incident to any printing operation. U. S. Patent 3,618,736 discloses mechanism for inhibiting actual print impact while still permitting lifting of escapement pawl 10.

Simplified Tabulation Mechanism

A typewriter like that disclosed in U S Patent 3,618,736 accomplishes tabulation to preset column positions as an inhibited print function. Escapement pawl 10, carried by letter feeding type element carrier 11, is lifted by torque bar 12 from stationary rack 13 incident to any printing operation. U. S. Patent 3,618,736 discloses mechanism for inhibiting actual print impact while still permitting lifting of escapement pawl 10.

Tabulation is selected by a rightward pull on cable 15 upon depression of a tabulation key, not shown, to pivot latch 16 counterclockwise, and release tab lever 17 for movement by spring 18 to a position against ledge 19 of the escapement pawl 10. Depression of the tabulation key also initiates a nonprint operation of the typewriter, which results in pivoting of torque bar 12 to lift pawl 10 from rack 13. As ledge 19 of pawl 10 clears tooth 20 of the tab lever 17, the pawl 10 becomes trapped out of the rack 13 and the carrier 11 is free to move to the right. Pivoting of the tab lever 17 also places counter stop 22 thereof in line with a set tab stop 23 on tab rack 24. Encounter by counter stop 22 of a tab stop 23 drives the tab lever 17 counterclockwise back to its rest position unlatching tooth 20 from the escapement pawl 10, thereby allowing pawl 10 to reenter rack 13 and terminate the tabulation operation.
