An electrical circuit board has electrical pins which are placed in the board and soldered to the printed circuits on the board. The pins are used for wire termination and circuit card connections when in use, and testers are used to check out the board for circuit errors such as opens and shorts.

In Fig. 1, Pin 10 and contact 11 show a test connection wherein the pin contacts a dished-out portion 12 in the end of the contact. However, with this contact a number of "false opens" may be encountered due to foreign materials 13 interfering with the electrical connection. The tests are made at the very top of the pin where the foreign material is located and this material may be atmospheric debris, solder flux residue, cleaning solutions, board coatings used to protect circuitry, oxidation, or residues from contaminated baths. The single point rests on the pin sandwiching any contamination which may result in arc damage, fusing of contact and pin materials, carbonizing of the contaminants and poor electrical connection.

To solve the problem, a hole 14 is drilled in the contact 11 as shown in Fig. 2. The hole diameter selected contacts the radiused pin at a point away from the top of the pin. The sharp edge of the hole pushes foreign materials away from the pin being tested, with the hole depth allowing room for the top of the pin and the contamination to enter.
