Power and free conveyor 10 drives carriers 11 selectively as determined by hook-up actuator 12. To be driven, a carrier 11 is connected by a pawl device to a conveyor chain within conveyor track 13.

Control device 14 is strategically located on track 13 and yieldably resists carrier motion, to thereby test the adequacy of the pawl connection prior to lifting of the carrier 11 by the conveyor 10. The resistance is provided by a pair of cam shaped wedging plates 15 (Fig. 2) that are biased together by springs 16, to frictionally engage a pendant flange 17 of the carrier 11. Wedging plates 15 also stabilize the carrier 11 against lateral swinging movement. The downstream edge 18 is squared, so as to positively intercept the pendant flange 17 of a carrier 11 that has broken away from the conveyor 10 and is moving opposite to conveyor direction. Electrical switch 19 is mounted on the side of control device 14 and senses outward movement of plate 15 to monitor passage of a carrier 11 thereby.
